Yahrzeit, referring to the anniversary of the Hebrew date of a person’s passing, is an opportunity for reflection and introspection. It is a time to remember and honor the best values a loved one exemplified in his or her life and is commemorated by reciting the Kaddish in synagogue and by lighting a Yahrzeit candle at sunset at home. When a death occurs after sunset, the following day is used to observe the Yahrzeit.
Yahrzeit candles are also known as yizkor candles, because they may also be lit on behalf of loved ones on the four Jewish holidays (Yom Kippur, Shemini Atzeret, Passover and Shavuot) which include a Yizkor, or Jewish memorial, service. Knowing the proper Yahrzeit date each year following the initial anniversary of the passing of a loved one can be a challenge.
